Hans Meertens portrayal of the subject of women in contemporary culture has long been a passion and a focus in his work. Having predominantly worked in a large scale painterly format, these works are Meertens first real foray into the print medium.
Choosing to step away from sweeping brush strokes and bright garish colours, Meertens has moved back to monotone, linear forms, whose creation is perfectly suited to the process of etching.
Meertens works tend to focus on the lone female, although each is dominant and powerful. In this heavily patterned and expressive work, Meertens offers us the image of a confident figure with a steady gaze, subtly challenging the viewer.
Edging closely towards Meertens typically rough, American-graffiti influenced style, this work offers a classic tag line associated with his women, "good girls say no, bad girls say when." Meertens sticks to a theme of bad-boy ethics, leaning towards the view of bad girls as dominant go-getters. This underlying current is consistent throughout his work, pulling his printwork nicely into this oeuvre.
