Hans Meertens portrayal of the subject of women in contemporary culture has long been a passion and a focus in his work. Having predominantly worked in a large scale painterly format, these works are Meertens first real foray into the print medium.
Choosing to step away from sweeping brush strokes and bright garish colours, Meertens has moved back to monotone, linear forms, whose creation is perfectly suited to the process of etching.
In this work, Meertens keeps to his typical muse; the young woman. Her confidence here is particularly stated in comparison to many of his other works. Her fixed gaze and bent forward posture are bordering on aggressive, with her rebellious skull and cross bones tattoo adding to the mix.
